First impressions
The machine we received for testing was the cardboard-box version, but a plastic case version of this tool also exists. At first glance the Metabo angle grinder is what we expect from an angle grinder. Nothing special.
I looked in vain in the box for the special spanner used for changing the disc — Metabo has no need for such a thing. The disc change can be done very quickly, with no tools and no trouble at all. I could best compare it to a childproof cap: you just push and turn.
The next convenience feature is the free positioning of the guard. The guard can be rotated into any position in a few seconds without any tools, and you don’t even have to remove the cutting disc for it.
Metabo thought of left-handers too
It is not unusual at other manufacturers either that the handle can be fitted on both sides, so left-handers can manage with the tool as well — it’s just that the switch won’t fall to hand. Metabo went further than this: by undoing four screws the whole cutting head can be removed, and refitted after a 180-degree turn we get a perfect left-handed tool.
The switch deserves a few words too
Personally, my problem with the switch on most angle grinders was that switching on was rather awkward with gloves on. I had no such problem with this switch.
On the machine we also find a speed control, thanks to which it can be used not only for cutting but for grinding and polishing as well.
The design of the housing
The tool is pleasant to hold, not too heavy, and can be used even for a whole day’s work. All in, 2.1 kg. The 1000 watt motor will quite certainly cope with most of the usual tasks we can expect from a one-handed tool like this. The Autobalancer reduces vibration, which not only means comfort for the user but also extends the life of the cutting disc.
Innovation for durability
The motor’s ventilation openings were placed at the end of the machine, as far as possible from the cutting disc; with this trick the life of the motor can be significantly increased. If the cutting disc jams, an automatic clutch disconnects the motor from the disc, protecting both the tool and its operator at once.
The end of the carbon brush is made of a non-conductive material, so when it is completely worn the motor simply stops. This prevents the injury caused by a carbon brush working its way out. After changing the carbon brush the machine can be used again.
