What is a CAS battery?

The PC 18-65 works with Metabo CAS (Cordless Alliance System) batteries.

This is a professional 18 V battery platform that more than 30 manufacturers now use in common.

The essence: one battery – several brands – several hundred machines.

That is why in this article we refer simply to a CAS battery, since the system is fully standardised and of industrial quality.

Comparison with everyday power banks

How does a CAS battery hold up against conventional power banks?

The power banks available in shops typically have a capacity of 10,000–20,000 mAh, which sounds like a lot at first, but it is important to understand that these are meant in a 5 volt system.

Metabo CAS batteries, by contrast, work in an 18 volt system.

That is why it is worth comparing the capacity not in mAh but in Wh (watt-hours), because that is what shows the real energy content.

  • A 20,000 mAh power bank stores approx. 74 Wh of energy.
  • A Metabo 18 V / 8.0 Ah CAS battery, on the other hand, contains 144 Wh of energy, that is, nearly twice as much.
  • The energy content of a 10,000 mAh power bank is approx. 37 Wh – compared with which the CAS battery has an advantage of about four times, depending on the type.

This is why the Metabo PC 18-65 can:

✔ charge a laptop,

✔ supply two devices in parallel,

✔ work for hours as an LED lamp,

✔ provide far greater reserve energy than a conventional power bank.

The CAS battery, then, is not in the category of “little power banks you can put in your pocket” – this is already a professional energy reserve, designed for workplace needs.

The abbreviation PD stands for Power Delivery.

This is a fast and intelligent charging standard, used mainly via a USB-C connector.

What can PD do?

  • It delivers high power
    Power Delivery can transmit up to 100 W (with newer versions even more) via USB-C.
    That is why laptops, tablets and phones can also be charged with it – not only small devices.
  • Intelligent communication
    The charger and the device agree with each other on how much current is requested and how much may be given:
    5V → 9V → 12V → 15V → 20V, with a current of up to 3–5 A.
    It is safe because it always gives the optimal voltage and power (the one accepted by the device).
  • ⚡ Fast charging
    PD is one of the most widespread fast-charging standards, supported by most modern laptops, tablets and smartphones.

The unit has a USB-C PD 65 W output, which means:

✔ it can handle most notebooks (e.g. MacBook Air, business laptops, ultrabooks),

✔ it charges PD-capable phones/tablets quickly,
