What is a bi-metal self-drilling screw, and why is it worth using?
The bi-metal screw is a modern fastening technology solution that combines the advantages of two different metals. In our case a hardened carbon steel tip and a stainless steel screw body are welded together to form a self-drilling screw. This cleverly designed combination makes it possible for drilling and fastening to happen in a single operation, while corrosion resistance is also retained.
Why is a stainless steel self-drilling screw not enough for the job?
Self-drilling screws made of stainless steel resist corrosion excellently, outdoors too, but they have one serious drawback: they cannot be hardened, so into harder materials (steel, for example) they can be driven only with difficulty or not at all without pre-drilling – only into materials softer than themselves, e.g. aluminium. And pre-drilling is not only time-consuming, it also calls for more tools and more operations.
